Week Seven

For week Six, I learned the First Chapter of UI design in DesignLab

User Interface (digital)

Graphical User Interface:

Wireframes/Interface/Mockup/Prototype

Contents - information to users

Components - visuals and design patterns to present information

Tasks - user commands

Principles of Interface Design - set out by Don Norman

  1. Visibility  (visibility guiding user behavior /  visibility multiplied when the element is repeated

  2. Feedback (give user the acknowledge of the action they take)

  3. Constraints (restriction to the range of available interaction options)

  4. Mapping (control for a function have a clear intuitive relationship to the function itself)

  5. Consistency (similar functions - look similar)

  6. Affordance (appearance - indicates usage)

Gestalt Principles in UI design:

  1. Proximity

  2. Similarity

  3. Continuity

  4. Closure = users tend to complete incomplete shapes

  5. Symmetry

  6. Figure/Ground (Create visual hierarchy)

  7. Common fate (separate elements moving together, moving at a similar way being related)

Usability Principles

  1. Learnability

  2. Error prevention and error forgiveness (invalid email address- tell users something needs to fix)

  3. Efficiency

  4. Memorability (drawing on established design patterns)

  5. Satisfaction
